In the broadest sense, a gateway page is just that! A gateway or starting point to other pages of information. Many people also use the term 'index' 'directory,' or 'portal' to describe such a place. It's a single point on the internet which contains links to more information. The links are usually organized by topic or category.

One of the best known gateways on the net is the Yahoo home page. Yahoo's top page contains links to other top pages which, in turn, point to still others, and so on, until practically the entire content of the internet is linked to in some manner.

As an example, someone could go to the Yahoo home page, click on auctions, locate a link to eBay, click on that, click on some category, and eventually find one of your auctions on their screen. OR! Because eBay itself is a gateway, if the person knew about your auction, they could start their search a little closer by just starting at the eBay home page (gateway)
